HIKING A BIKING TRAIL – SERIOUSLY SHARP WAY

The Recreation Hub at the intersection of Routes 100 & 17 is a great choice to launch a walk in the woods. There is plenty of parking, a restroom and a manicured woods trails that are truly sublime.

From the meadow behind the building, take the bridge over Mill Brook. It’s a spectacular piece of engineering and a delightful way to begin and finish if you are going out and back, like I do. The sounds and sight of rushing water are invigorating and also makes a nice place to just sit outside and have lunch.

The trail, named Seriously Sharp Way, winds through a steep hillside but is made very manageable by the well-designed switchbacks. In fact, most of the grades are quite forgiving. There are several hulking, ancient Maple trees along the way, decaying and gouged out by woodpeckers, but most of the lower slope is now a mature Hemlock forest.

The well packed trail includes built up berms around many turns and boardwalks over wet areas, with concave decking. These features make mountain biking a dream, especially downhill. But I find this trail also very inviting for my walking pace. There is some magnificent stone and drainage work in this area that deserves a standing ovation!

Heading up hill you can go left heading towards Featherbed / Flatbread or right up the hill towards Dana Hill Road on the Revolution Trail (not signed but obvious).

I encourage folks to get out and explore this gem of a trail network, smack dab in the middle of valley.
