Hot Summer, Cool House! A conversation with our friend Joe at Sun Stoppers.

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, or in a dark basement, you’ll recall that this summer has been extremely hot. One thing I have noticed is that my truck (with solar protected tinted windows) stays way cooler than my daughter’s car (no window protection). My friend Joe at Sunstoppers has been my go-to company for my last 3 vehicles' window protection. I noticed that his company now installs solar protective window films of different types for homes and commercial buildings. With this summer’s sweltering heat, I thought I’d check in with Joe to find out more as I think it might be a great fit for many of our clients’ homes:
Erik: Hi Joe, it was great to catch up with you last week. I saw that you have expanded your business to include residential/commercial window films for solar protection, privacy, and temperature control. Tell me a bit about what options you have and suggest for residential properties.
Joe: Hello Erik, we have several options to help our customer address different concerns, from Dual Reflective film for maximum privacy, to glare control, or our ceramic line that is more of a natural looking film from both sides of the window. The great thing about window film is customers can decide what look fits well for their application, and it’s something we go over in detail during our free consultation.

Erik: If installed, how do these films affect the wanted solar gain during the winter months?
Joe: In our experience, what happens, as because it’s insulating the glass, it allows more of the heat from the heat source in the home to stay in the home.
Erik: Is this equally suitable for new construction and existing homes?
Joe: Great Question! That's a Big Yes! Window films can be applied in existing homes, as well as new construction. We have had great success in all construction types from new to old. In fact, some of our greatest reduction in solar gain has been in older homes with windows that are not up to today's standards (Dual pane, Low E, etc.).
Erik: How long does it take to complete a project on a home with approximately 15 windows?
Joe: Every project is different, but let’s use a standard 30” x 30” window as a benchmark. In this case we can have film installed, and glass detailed (all included in our pricing) in approximately 3 hours for 15 windows.

Erik: I'm sure it varies by product and property, but how much does something like this cost?
Joe: Most of our films Are between $8-$12 per sq ft installed.
Erik: I've seen your social media and some impressive homes and commercial properties that you have worked on. Can you name a few projects that you are particularly proud of?
Joe: I’ve thought a lot about this question. We are a small family run business and take every job, every customer and their concerns seriously, so that the outcome is what they expect, and that is what we expect to deliver. I don't have one property that I'm particularly proud of. I am extremely proud of ALL of them equally.
Erik: Any parting thoughts on how well these window films perform?
Joe: Window film delivers benefits you can feel right away — cooler rooms, less glare, and greater comfort. Over time, the energy savings, UV protection, and longer life of furnishings make it a smart upgrade that most people wish they’d done sooner.
Erik: Thanks so much Joe, wishing you continued success and clean windows!
